It’s funny, this is the second blog post I’ve written about marriage, you’d probably thought I was suggesting something… but no, getting to that age where people around me are settling down and the topic is becoming more and more frequent. Listen, I’m a sucker for a successful partnership. Nothing makes me happier than hearing my friends have truly met someone they feel they can settle down with. Being married to someone you truly love must be a wonderful experience but I guess it’s the novelty of the wedding ceremony itself which clouds the whole thing for me. I’m convinced the majority of people are having these grand weddings so they can post pictures on social media. Remember seeing the videography for one wedding, I thought it was the start of a Bond film. They had drones and visual effects on show, you thought you was witnessing a marriage but little did you know you was an extra on a Spielberg action movie.
Don’t get me started with the cost of a wedding too, one of my guys told me the price of his and I almost had a nosebleed. Couples are out here paying mortgage deposits for weddings all willy-nilly, it’s so rattling. I’m sure in the future you’ll need to get credit checked before applying to marry cos’ this has now become a premium activity. You’ll be paying entry fee just to attend one with ladies free before 11. Coming from an ethnic background myself, I know how my people like to stunt too. Invite their extended families and their dogs just to prove they can host an event. Invite that distant cousin who doesn’t actually like you and that one uncle who you wouldn’t trust alone with your lil’ siblings. Weddings aren’t even for the couple anymore, it’s so the parents have something to brag about. Heaven forbid you embarrass your mum and dad on their… I mean your wedding day!
Had the pleasure of being asked to be a groomsman for a wedding later this year in fact, it’s about time! I realise most of my closest friends are still acting like Glen Quagmire but I was getting impatient. I’m yet to understand the objective of a groomsman but I don’t need an excuse to look fly in a tuxedo. Might have to wear that tux at my own wedding too to spread the cost. You can’t pay all that money just to wear something once right? Guess it’s a bit harder with women cos’ you can’t exactly wear a wedding dress when you’re popping to the shops or doing a spot of gardening. Leaves all in the veil and stuff won’t be a good look.
As wonderful as a marriage is, we as a society need to stop treating it as an achievement. Not saying you should stop congratulating people but I’ve owned umbrellas which have lasted longer than certain people’s marriages. Staying happily married is the goal I’m trying to aim for. Rushing into marriage is such a no no for me, you can’t build a solid marriage until you have a solid foundation. The pressures that people put themselves under to get married is frightening, like it’s a job role or something. The pressure that parents put on their children, especially their daughters, needs to stop too. I’ll be damned if I spend an arm and a leg for a lifetime of regret; I’d rather be single, happy and invest in shares lol. Seriously though, I cannot wait until the day I get to Milly Rock down the aisle with my missus but when I do, y’all will know I’m in the best position possible.
